A 2018 systematic review in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry pooled 10-year survival rates for ultra-thin lithium disilicate veneers at 94.4%, against 95.6% for conventionally prepared porcelain veneers. The gap is inside the margin of clinical noise. The 2021 Beier et al. retrospective on 318 minimally invasive veneers reported a mean survival of 11.2 years with debonding (not fracture) as the primary failure mode. How thin can a no-prep veneer actually be made?

Production no-prep veneers run 0.3 to 0.5 mm at the facial. Below 0.3 mm the ceramic becomes too fragile to handle during try-in and the bond layer thickness starts dominating the optical result. Lithium disilicate (IPS e.max) is the material of choice at this thickness because of its 360 to 400 MPa flexural strength. Feldspathic porcelain can go thinner but trades strength for translucency, which is a different case-planning conversation between the dentist and the lab technician.

Do no-prep veneers require a nightguard?

For any patient with parafunctional history, yes. For patients with clean occlusal records and no clenching or grinding signs, a nightguard is optional but recommended for restoration longevity.
