Why anteriors are the hardest shade case in the lab

Posterior crowns forgive shade error because the patient never sees them in the mirror. Anteriors sit in the smile line, adjacent to natural dentition, and any mismatch in value (brightness) reads as fake from four feet away. Per a 2019 Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry study, value mismatch is the #1 cited reason for anterior remake requests, ahead of hue and chroma combined. Getting anteriors right requires three inputs from the operatory and layered ceramic work at the bench.

What photography does Dani Dental need for an anterior shade case?

Minimum three photographs: a shade tab held edge-to-edge with the adjacent tooth under D65 balanced daylight, a polarized shot to reveal internal structure without surface reflection, and a retracted full-arch shot for context on value across the smile line. For high-esthetic cases (central incisors, cases with visible mamelons or characterization), we also request a stump-shade photograph of the prepped tooth against a VITA ND1-ND9 tab. Send DSLR or high-resolution phone photography; avoid operatory overhead lighting.

Zirconia or lithium disilicate for anterior crowns?

For single anteriors where esthetics lead, lithium disilicate (e.max) at 400 MPa flexural strength is the standard choice. It offers superior translucency and shade blending versus zirconia. For anterior bridges spanning three or more units, or cases with heavy occlusal loading, monolithic or layered zirconia at 900-1200 MPa becomes necessary for structural reasons. How long does an anterior shade case take at Dani Dental?

Standard anterior single-unit lithium disilicate: 7-10 business days from case receipt to ship. Anterior bridge or characterized case with custom staining and multiple firings: 10-14 business days. Cases requiring a bisque bake try-in add 5-7 days for the round trip. If the case is time-sensitive (patient traveling, wedding, upcoming photography), flag it on intake and we will path it through our rush queue.
