Why it works this way
Flexural strength by zirconia generation
Not all zirconia is the same material. First-generation 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) tests at 1,100 to 1,200 MPa flexural strength per ISO 6872 (Zhang & Lawn, Dental Materials, 2018). It is opaque, and it is the workhorse for posterior crowns and bridges where strength outranks esthetics. Fourth-generation 5Y-TZP, the high-translucency formulation used for anterior monolithic crowns, drops to roughly 600 to 700 MPa to gain the optical properties. 4Y-TZP sits in the middle near 800 to 900 MPa.
