Shoot at 1:2 magnification with cross-polarized flash, neutral gray card in frame, ISO 100, f/22. Take three frames: tab left, tab right, tab incisal.

Why retracted shade photos fail at the lab bench

Shade communication breaks down at one of four points: dehydrated teeth, ambient color contamination from operatory lighting, the wrong tab orientation, or post-processed images that strip the data the ceramist needs. A 2019 study in the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry found visual shade matching agrees with spectrophotometric measurement only about 26.6% of the time, which is why the photo workflow matters more than the chairside eye call. The retracted photo is the ceramist's only chance to see what you saw.

What camera setup does Dani Dental recommend for shade photography?

A DSLR or mirrorless body with a 100mm macro lens and either a ring flash or dual-point flash setup. Canon and Nikon both work; the brand matters less than consistent exposure settings across cases. Lock the camera at ISO 100, f/22, 1/200s, and shoot in RAW. A polarizing filter clipped to the flash diffuser is the single highest-impact accessory for anterior shade work. Should I take shade photos before or after preparation?
