A multi-unit abutment (MUA) is the connector that sits between the implant fixture and a screw-retained, multi-implant prosthesis. Without it, full-arch hybrids and All-on-X cases would not seat passively. The MUA threads into the implant, raises the restorative platform above the soft tissue, and corrects divergent implant angles so a single rigid framework can be screwed down across four to six implants without strain. Straight MUAs handle parallel implants; angled MUAs come in 17 and 30 degree corrections for tilted posterior implants common in All-on-4 protocols.

What is the difference between an implant-level and abutment-level impression?
An implant-level impression captures the implant platform itself using a scan body or impression coping that threads directly into the fixture. An abutment-level impression captures the top of an already-placed multi-unit abutment. For All-on-X cases, abutment-level is standard because the MUAs stay in place permanently and the prosthesis seats on them, not on the implants. Scanning the wrong level is the most common cause of full-arch remakes, so confirm the level on every Rx before the patient leaves the chair.
When do you use a straight versus an angled multi-unit abutment?
Straight MUAs are used when the implant is placed close to the planned prosthetic screw access, typically the anterior implants in an All-on-4. Can a multi-unit abutment be reused on a remake?
Yes, in most cases. The MUA is torqued to the implant and intended to stay in place across the life of the prosthesis, including provisional-to-final transitions and any future remakes. The prosthetic screws that hold the bridge to the MUA are single-use and should be replaced on each seat. If the MUA itself is damaged, stripped, or the wrong height for the final prosthesis, it gets swapped, but the goal is to plan correctly the first time so the MUA placed at surgery is the one that carries the final.
