What a temporary crown does

A temporary crown, sometimes called a provisional, covers a tooth after the dentist preps it for a permanent crown. The prep removes enamel and dentin, which exposes the tooth to thermal sensitivity, bite forces, and bacterial ingress. The temporary seals the prep margin, maintains occlusion, preserves the interproximal contacts so adjacent teeth don't drift, and lets the patient eat and speak normally during the 2 to 3 week fabrication window for the final crown.

Can a temporary crown be worn longer than 3 weeks if the lab is delayed?

It can, but risk climbs after week 3. Temporary cement weakens with thermal cycling and chewing forces, raising debond risk. The temporary material itself wears, which shifts occlusion and can let adjacent teeth drift, compromising the fit of the permanent crown when it arrives. What material is best for a temporary crown?

Depends on the case. Chairside bis-acryl composite is fast and adequate for posterior single units worn 2 to 3 weeks. Milled PMMA is stronger, more dimensionally stable, and the right choice for multi-unit provisionals, longer wear windows, or anterior cases where esthetics matter. For full-arch implant provisionals or anterior cases where the temporary functions as a shape and shade try-in, lab-fabricated PMMA or composite provisionals are standard. The material follows the case complexity and the wear duration.

Why does my temporary crown feel different from a permanent crown?

Temporaries are made of softer materials than zirconia or lithium disilicate, so they wear faster and can feel slightly different under bite pressure. The cement is intentionally weaker so the dentist can remove the temporary cleanly. Occlusion is set conservatively so the temporary doesn't fracture during the 2 to 3 week window. The permanent crown, milled from full-strength ceramic and bonded with permanent cement, will feel like a natural tooth in function. Any sensitivity, sharp edges, or bite issues during the temporary phase should be reported to the dentist.
