What is an implant supported denture?

A conventional denture rests on the residual ridge and relies on soft tissue adaptation and adhesives for retention. An implant supported denture is anchored to two or more implants using attachments or a bar, transferring load to bone rather than tissue. This improves stability, reduces ridge resorption, and allows a thinner, more comfortable prosthesis for the patient your practice restores.

For a removable overdenture, two to four implants are common in the mandible and four in the maxilla, depending on bone volume and opposing dentition. Fixed full arch prostheses generally require four to six implants per arch. The final count depends on your treatment plan, occlusal scheme, and cantilever considerations. We fabricate overdentures with locator style attachments, ball attachments, and bar retained designs based on your prescription. For fixed options we produce screw retained hybrid prostheses using titanium substructures with acrylic or zirconia. Send the implant system, platform, and preferred attachment on the Rx and we will match components and verify tolerances during design.

Send final impressions or an intraoral scan capturing implant positions with scan bodies or verified impression copings, an opposing model, a bite registration at the correct vertical dimension, and a face bow or photos for esthetic reference. Include the implant system, platform size, and tissue height. For full arch cases, a verified jig or verification stent is recommended.

For removable overdentures we typically use processed acrylic with denture teeth over a reinforced base. For fixed full arch restorations we offer titanium reinforced acrylic hybrids or monolithic zirconia with a titanium substructure. Zirconia offers strength and stain resistance while acrylic hybrids allow easier chairside repair. We will help you choose based on occlusion, esthetic demands, and maintenance expectations.
