How an intraoral scan works
The clinician moves a wand-style optical scanner across each arch in a defined path (occlusal, lingual, buccal). The scanner captures 6,000+ frames per second using structured light or confocal imaging, and the chairside software stitches them into a single 3D mesh in real time. A full-arch scan with bite registration typically takes 3 to 5 minutes per arch on a current-generation scanner. The output is an STL, PLY, or proprietary file (3Shape DCM, iTero IOR) that uploads directly to the lab portal.
