5th generation vs 7th generation dental adhesive: when to use each

<p>The choice between 5th and 7th generation adhesives is less about which is better and more about which case is in front of you. The literature consensus (Van Meerbeek et al., Operative Dentistry 2011; Peumans et al., Dental Materials 2014) is that etch-and-rinse still wins on enamel, while self-etch wins on predictability when isolation is imperfect.</p><p>Pick a 5th generation etch-and-rinse adhesive when you are bonding lithium disilicate or feldspathic veneers, when the prep is enamel-dominant, or when the restoration will be loaded in tension (anterior incisal edges, Class IV composites). Choose a 7th generation self-etch when treating pediatric patients, when rubber dam isolation is compromised, or when the case is a posterior Class I or Class II direct composite where dentin bonding matters more than enamel and chair time is at a premium.</p><p>For indirect cases that come through our lab (Emax veneers, zirconia-bonded restorations, hybrid abutments), we recommend a 5th generation protocol with selective enamel etching. Cement bond durability on the intaglio surface depends on it.</p>

If you are placing veneers or anterior indirect work, we will recommend a 5th generation etch-and-rinse protocol in the case notes, because that is what the bond-strength data supports for enamel-dominant preps.</p>
