COMPARISONS
Fully digital workflow vs hybrid digital-analog for restorative cases
A fully digital workflow runs intraoral scan to CAD design to milled or printed restoration with no physical impression or stone model. A hybrid digital-analog workflow keeps analog impressions or models at one or more stages, then digitizes downstream.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A fully digital workflow runs intraoral scan to CAD design to milled or printed restoration with no physical impression or stone model. A hybrid digital-analog workflow keeps analog impressions or models at one or more stages, then digitizes downstream. Fully digital wins on turnaround and fit consistency for single units and most full-arch cases. Hybrid still earns its place on complex soft-tissue work and legacy case planning.
SIDE BY SIDE
Fully digital workflow vs Hybrid digital-analog workflow
| Consideration | Fully digital workflow | Hybrid digital-analog workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Impression method | Intraoral scan (STL file) | PVS or polyether impression, sometimes plus scan |
| Model output | Printed model or modelless | Stone model poured from impression |
| Typical single-unit turnaround | 4-6 business days | 7-10 business days |
| Chair time for impression | 3-7 minutes scan | 8-15 minutes tray, set, retake risk |
| Shipping cost to lab | None (file upload) | Courier or overnight ship per case |
| Case archival | STL stored indefinitely, reprint on demand | Physical model storage, degrades over time |
| Best fit for complex soft tissue | Workable with tissue retraction protocol | Often preferred for subgingival margins |
| Remake risk from impression error | Lower (scan reviewed before approval) | Higher (distortion, voids, tear) |
| Requires IOS at the practice | true | false |
THE TRADE-OFFS
Where each one earns its place

Most single-unit crown and bridge cases referred to Dani Dental run fully digital from intake to delivery. The scan-to-mill pipeline shaves three to four business days off the average turnaround and removes the impression-distortion remake category entirely. For practices already running a Trios, iTero, or Medit scanner, fully digital is the default we recommend.

That said, hybrid still has a seat at the table. Choose fully digital when the case is a single unit, a short-span bridge, or a full-arch implant case with a clean tissue field. Go with hybrid digital-analog when the margin sits deep subgingival, when the soft tissue needs a custom tray to capture mobile mucosa, or when the referring practice does not yet operate an intraoral scanner. We also recommend hybrid for legacy case continuations where the original stone model is the reference of record.

The decision is not ideological. It is per case. Our technicians will flag the recommended workflow when you submit the Rx, and the case manager confirms before fabrication begins.

Dani Dental runs both workflows in-house. Roughly 78% of cases that ship through our digital workflow pillar are fully digital end-to-end; the remaining 22% involve at least one analog stage, typically a custom tray impression for full dentures or a subgingival margin pickup. We do not push every practice toward fully digital just because it is faster on our end. If your case calls for a custom tray, we will tell you.

Where a national milling center will likely beat us on raw throughput for high-volume single units, our edge is the named technician answering the phone when the case is ambiguous. That matters more on the hybrid cases than the fully digital ones.
