Both materials have a defensible use case in 2026, and the referring dentist owns the call.</p><p>Choose gold when the case is a second molar in a documented bruxer with minimal interocclusal clearance, because the 0.5 mm reduction tolerance preserves tooth structure that zirconia cannot. Pick gold when the patient has a known ceramic-fracture history on prior posterior units. Go with monolithic zirconia when esthetics matter at all, including premolars and first molars visible on a wide smile. Choose zirconia when the patient requests metal-free, when budget is a factor, or when the prep already has 1.0-1.5 mm of occlusal clearance available.</p><p>Opt for zirconia as the default for full-arch implant-supported cases and screw-retained posterior units. Recommend gold only when the specific clinical variables above are present.</p>
