<p>The decision is rarely about the lab. It is about the diagnosis. A patient who fractured two posterior composites in the last 18 months is not a soft splint candidate, no matter how much they protest the bulk of an acrylic appliance. A teenage athlete needing season-long protection during contact sport is not getting a processed hard splint.</p><p>Pick a hard acrylic splint when the patient presents with moderate to severe bruxism, documented TMD symptoms, or a recently restored dentition with crowns, veneers, or full-arch work that needs nighttime protection. Choose a soft thermoplastic splint when the indication is mild clenching, pediatric occlusal coverage, athletic protection, or a short-term post-surgical guard where comfort and quick fabrication matter more than longevity.</p><p>The grey zone is the mild-to-moderate bruxer who cannot tolerate rigid acrylic on the first try. Reasonable path: start soft for 60 days, document wear patterns, and graduate to hard once the patient has adapted to wearing an appliance at all. Compliance beats material science when the appliance lives in the nightstand drawer.</p>

We mount on a semi-adjustable articulator, process in PMMA, and finish with a flat occlusal plane balanced to the prescribed scheme (canine guidance or group function, per Rx).</p><p>If your patient population skews pediatric, athletic, or short-term protective, a chairside vacuum-formed soft guard from a local supplier may serve you better on cost and turnaround. We are a lab, not a one-stop-shop, and a $40 in-office soft guard is a legitimate answer for a teenage soccer player. Where we earn the case is the bruxer with a freshly seated full-arch zirconia bridge who needs that work protected for the next decade.</p>
