COMPARISONS

Porcelain veneer vs composite veneer: a referring dentist's decision guide

Porcelain veneers win on longevity, stain resistance, and esthetic ceiling: 10 to 15 year service life with lab-fabricated shade layering. Composite veneers win on cost, single-visit delivery, and reversibility, with a 4 to 8 year service life and chairside repair.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Porcelain veneers win on longevity, stain resistance, and esthetic ceiling: 10 to 15 year service life with lab-fabricated shade layering. Composite veneers win on cost, single-visit delivery, and reversibility, with a 4 to 8 year service life and chairside repair. Choose porcelain for anterior cases where shade match and edge translucency matter. Choose composite for younger patients, budget-sensitive cases, or trial smiles before a definitive restoration.

THE TRADE-OFFS

Where each one earns its place

The decision tree for most referring dentists comes down to longevity, esthetic demand, and the patient's age and budget. Both options are legitimate. The trap is defaulting to one for every case.

Choose porcelain veneers when the case involves the anterior six, shade match against natural adjacent teeth is the priority, and the patient is over 25 with stable occlusion. Pick porcelain when the patient has existing tetracycline staining, fluorosis, or peg laterals where masking demands lab-layered opacity. Opt for porcelain when the treatment plan calls for 10-plus year service life and the patient accepts the enamel reduction tradeoff.

Choose composite veneers when the patient is under 25 and you want to preserve enamel for a future definitive restoration. Go with composite when the case is a trial smile, diastema closure, or single-tooth incisal edge repair. Recommend composite when budget is the deciding factor and the patient understands the 4 to 8 year refinish cycle. Select composite for orthodontic finishing cases where final tooth position may shift.

Dani Dental fabricates porcelain veneers, not composite. Composite is a chairside material, placed by the clinician, and no lab is in that loop. If you are placing direct composite veneers, the decision is yours and the result is yours. We are not the right partner for that case.

For porcelain veneer cases, Dani's ceramics department handles refractory die and pressed ceramic veneers with named-technician shade matching. Lead ceramist Petar Dobrikov, third generation on the bench, works the anterior cases directly and his direct line ships with every case. Standard turnaround on a 6-unit anterior veneer case is 10 business days from receipt of scan or impression. Remake rate on veneer cases ran under 2.5% across the last 12 months.
