Where each one earns its place

<p>The decision is rarely category-level. It is case-level, and the two variables that decide it are the position in the arch and the occlusal load. A second molar on a bruxer is not the same case as a lateral incisor on a 28-year-old with a Class I occlusion, and the material should not be the same either.</p><p>Pick zirconia when the bridge is posterior, the span is three units or longer, or the patient shows wear facets and a heavy occlusion. Monolithic 4Y or 5Y zirconia handles the load and avoids the porcelain chip-off failure mode that drives most PFM remakes. Choose porcelain-fused-to-metal when the case is anterior, esthetic demands are high, and the patient has adequate prep clearance for a layered ceramic; the shade depth a skilled ceramist builds in layered porcelain still beats what monolithic zirconia delivers in the smile zone. Opt for layered zirconia (zirconia substructure with a porcelain cutback) when you want anterior esthetics with a stronger core than PFM offers, accepting that the porcelain cutback can still chip.</p><p>Span length is the other gate. Recommend zirconia for anything four units or longer regardless of position, because PFM porcelain fracture risk climbs sharply with span.</p>

<p>Dani Dental fabricates both. Roughly 70% of bridge cases shipping from the Mesa lab are now zirconia (monolithic or layered) and the share has grown every year since 2022 as digital workflow and multilayer pucks closed most of the old esthetic gap.
