Where each one earns its place

<p>The cement decision follows the restoration, not the other way around. Glass ionomer and resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) still belong in the operatory, but the indication window has narrowed as monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate have taken over the indirect restoration mix.</p><p>Choose resin cement when the restoration is a lithium disilicate crown, a veneer, a resin-bonded bridge, or any prep with under 4mm of axial wall height. Adhesion is doing the retention work, not the prep geometry. Pick RMGI when seating a full-coverage monolithic zirconia or PFM crown on a retentive prep with isolation challenges, particularly subgingival margins on a lower second molar where a rubber dam will not seat cleanly.</p><p>Go with resin cement on every anterior esthetic case where the margin could telegraph through thin ceramic. Opt for RMGI on pediatric stainless steel crowns and on high-caries-risk patients where the sustained fluoride release earns its place. When in doubt on a zirconia crown with good prep retention and clean isolation, either category works, RMGI is faster and forgives more.</p>

For lithium disilicate and layered ceramics out of our ceramics department, we recommend resin cement and name the adhesive system that matched the etch protocol we used lab-side. For monolithic zirconia crowns with retentive preps, we note RMGI as the simpler clinical path and resin cement as the alternative when isolation is solid.</p><p>Glass ionomer is genuinely the better call for some of the cases we ship: high-caries-risk patients, deep subgingival margins, and the cooperation-limited pediatric or geriatric chair. The cement is not a lab preference. It is a case-design output, and the case sheet says so.</p>
