COMPARISONS

Self-adhesive vs total-etch resin cement for indirect restorations

Self-adhesive resin cements skip the etch-and-bond steps and deliver roughly 15 to 20 MPa shear bond strength to dentin (per RelyX Unicem 2 IFU data). Total-etch systems reach 25 MPa or higher when technique is clean. Use self-adhesive for retentive zirconia and metal cases.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Self-adhesive resin cements skip the etch-and-bond steps and deliver roughly 15 to 20 MPa shear bond strength to dentin (per RelyX Unicem 2 IFU data). Total-etch systems reach 25 MPa or higher when technique is clean. Use self-adhesive for retentive zirconia and metal cases. Use total-etch for short preps, anterior lithium disilicate, and any case where retention form is compromised.

THE TRADE-OFFS

Where each one earns its place

The decision is driven by prep geometry and substrate, not personal preference. Self-adhesive cements (RelyX Unicem 2, Maxcem Elite, SpeedCEM Plus) trade peak bond strength for technique tolerance. Total-etch systems (Variolink Esthetic DC, Calibra Ceram with a 4th-gen bonding agent) deliver maximum retention when the field is controlled and the prep is short.

Pick self-adhesive resin cement when the prep has 4 mm or more of retentive axial wall, the substrate is monolithic zirconia, and isolation is imperfect (subgingival margins, sulcular bleeding, distal second molar). Choose total-etch resin cement when the case is an anterior lithium disilicate veneer, a short or overtapered prep, an onlay with limited retention form, or any partial-coverage lithium disilicate restoration where the bond is the retention.

For full-arch zirconia hybrids and screw-retained cases the question is moot, the prosthesis is mechanically retained. For cement-retained implant crowns on custom abutments, go with self-adhesive on the titanium base or zirconia abutment for cleanup predictability.

Dani Dental fabricates the restoration; the cement choice is yours at the chair. That said, every crown, veneer, and bridge that leaves our Tempe lab ships with a case-specific cementation note from the technician who finished it, written on the lab slip. Zirconia ships sandblasted at 50 microns and 2 bar per the Kern protocol, ready for an MDP-containing self-adhesive or a separate Z-Prime Plus step. Lithium disilicate veneers ship etched with 5% HF for 20 seconds and silanated, ready for total-etch.

If your case is borderline (short prep, questionable isolation, esthetic anterior) call the technician on the lab slip before you seat. Total-etch is genuinely the better answer for short anterior preps and partial-coverage lithium disilicate; we will tell you that on the phone. Our remake rate sits at under 2.5%, and cementation-related failures are a tracked category we review monthly.
