COMPARISONS
Single-unit crown vs three-unit bridge for a failing tooth
A single-unit crown restores one damaged tooth and preserves adjacent enamel. A three-unit bridge replaces a missing tooth by prepping the two neighbors as abutments. Choose the crown when the tooth is restorable.
THE BOTTOM LINE
A single-unit crown restores one damaged tooth and preserves adjacent enamel. A three-unit bridge replaces a missing tooth by prepping the two neighbors as abutments. Choose the crown when the tooth is restorable. Choose the bridge when extraction is planned and implant placement is not viable. Bridges commit two healthy teeth; implants avoid that trade-off entirely.
SIDE BY SIDE
Single-unit crown vs Three-unit bridge
| Consideration | Single-unit crown | Three-unit bridge |
|---|---|---|
| Tooth structure preserved | One prep, damaged tooth only | Three preps, two healthy abutments reduced |
| Indicated when | Tooth is restorable after endo, fracture, or large failing restoration | Tooth is missing or non-restorable and implant is contraindicated |
| Chair time at seat | Single seat visit, one margin | Longer seat, three margins and connector fit |
| Typical Dani turnaround | 5-7 business days, monolithic zirconia or layered | 7-10 business days, digital design with connector verification |
| Long-term risk profile | Isolated to the restored tooth | Failure of one abutment can compromise the full span |
| Hygiene maintenance | Standard flossing | Superfloss or threader under the pontic required |
| Reversibility | Refabricate the single unit if it fails | Abutment preps are permanent |
| Better alternative to consider | None if the tooth is restorable | Single implant plus crown when bone and systemic health allow |
THE TRADE-OFFS
Where each one earns its place

The decision hinges on whether the tooth in question is restorable. If the clinical exam and CBCT show enough sound structure with a ferrule after caries removal or endo, the single-unit crown is the conservative choice and protects the two neighbors from unnecessary reduction. If the tooth is already missing or planned for extraction with no path to an implant, the three-unit bridge becomes the fixed-prosthetic answer.

Pick the single-unit crown when the tooth is restorable and a ferrule of 1.5 to 2 mm can be established. Choose the three-unit bridge when the patient has ruled out an implant for cost, anatomy, or systemic reasons and the two adjacent teeth already carry large restorations that would benefit from full coverage. Recommend a single implant plus crown when the site has adequate bone, the patient is medically cleared, and the neighbors are virgin or minimally restored.

For borderline cases, send the CBCT and photos to your Dani technician before finalizing the plan. Connector design, occlusal scheme, and material selection change with the answer, and the earlier we see the case the tighter the fit at seat.

Dani Dental fabricates both restorations in the same digital workflow. Single-unit crowns ship in 5-7 business days in monolithic zirconia, layered zirconia, or lithium disilicate depending on the shade and occlusal demand. Three-unit bridges ship in 7-10 business days with connector cross-sections verified in CAD before milling. Every case ships with the technician's direct line for chairside troubleshooting at seat.

Honest read: if the site is implant-eligible, a single implant plus crown is the better long-term restoration than a three-unit bridge in most cases. We say so on the case-planning call. When the implant path is off the table, the bridge is a durable answer and we build it to last.
