Choose the soft thermoplastic guard when the patient is a mild clencher with no measurable wear, when you need interim protection during ortho relapse evaluation, or when a teenager needs short-term coverage before final restorative planning.</p><p>One edge case worth naming: patients with TMD symptoms layered onto bruxism. Go with a hard guard designed with a flat occlusal plane in those cases, not a soft guard. The soft material can amplify clenching reflex in symptomatic patients, which is the opposite of what you want.</p>
