Where each one earns its place

<p>The prescribing decision in 2026 is no longer zirconia-or-PFM by default. It is case-specific. The strength and esthetic gap that justified PFM for two decades has closed on monolithic zirconia for single-unit and short-span work, while PFM still earns its place on specific long-span and arch-matching cases.</p><p>Pick monolithic zirconia when the case is a posterior single-unit crown, a screw-retained implant crown, or any restoration where minimum tooth reduction matters. Choose monolithic zirconia when the patient has thin gingival biotype with recession risk, because the all-ceramic margin will not show metal at year 5. Opt for layered or multilayer zirconia when the case is anterior and shade-gradient esthetics matter.</p><p>Go with PFM when the case is a long-span bridge (4+ units) where the cast-metal substructure provides connector strength that zirconia connectors cannot match at the required cross-section. Select PFM when shade-matching to existing PFM crowns in the same arch is more important than absolute esthetic ceiling, because matching opaquer characteristics is easier than matching across material classes.</p>
