Do you bond or cement an all-ceramic crown?

THE SHORT ANSWER
All-ceramic crowns are bonded, not conventionally cemented. Adhesive resin bonding is required because the ceramic lacks the macroretention geometry that lets zinc phosphate or glass ionomer cements hold reliably. Bonding to etched ceramic with a silane coupling agent plus resin cement achieves a micromechanical seal that also reinforces the restoration against flexural fracture under occlusal load.

What sits behind it
The distinction matters clinically because the choice of luting protocol directly affects restoration survival. Feldspathic porcelain and lithium disilicate (e2.max press or CAD) both require hydrofluoric acid etching of the internal surface, silane application, and a light-cured or dual-cure resin cement. Zirconia-based all-ceramic crowns follow a different path: HF acid does not etch zirconia, so the protocol shifts to airborne-particle abrasion plus a phosphate-monomer primer (MDP) and an MDP-containing resin cement. Using the wrong protocol for the material is one of the most common sources of early debond failures that land a case back on the doctor's schedule.
For general dentists running high volumes of posterior all-ceramic work, lab communication about the specific ceramic material is not optional. A crown labeled 'all-ceramic' from one lab might be lithium disilicate; from another it might be a layered zirconia.
