Is zirconia better than emax?

For posterior restorations, monolithic zirconia is the practical default. It handles bruxers, implant-supported crowns, and full-arch cases without the fracture risk that haunts pressed ceramic in high-load zones. Multilayer zirconia (5Y-TZP grades) closes most of the esthetic gap versus e.max for premolars, and a skilled technician can characterize surface anatomy to the point where posterior zirconia reads naturally in clinical photos.

Anterior single units and smile cases are where e.max still earns its place. Lithium disilicate transmits light in a way that mimics natural enamel depth. When a patient has a high smile line, a lateral incisor that needs to blend with adjacent naturals, or a case where the shade tab is already near the edge of the range, e.max gives the ceramist more to work with optically. The tradeoff is fragility: e.max cantilevers and implant-supported anteriors carry real fracture risk.

For general dentists and prosthodontists running a mixed caseload, the practical answer is both materials, selected by case type.
