Chairside provisionals built from bis-acrylic or self-cure acrylic serve well for single-unit cases with straightforward margins. Lab-fabricated provisionals become the clinical standard when case complexity rises: full-arch implant cases, multi-unit anterior bridges requiring phonetic testing, or cases where the patient needs to trial a new vertical dimension of occlusion for 6-12 weeks before the final restoration is committed to porcelain or zirconia. The lab-built version gives the clinician a tested, accurate template to duplicate at delivery.

For prosthodontists managing full-arch reconstructions, a lab provisional is not an interim patch. It is a diagnostic tool. The technician uses the approved wax-up to mill a PMMA provisional that mirrors the final tooth positions, contours, and occlusal scheme. If the patient reports phonetic issues or the clinician spots occlusal interferences at the two-week check, those corrections happen in PMMA, not in final-stage zirconia where changes cost significantly more and compress delivery timelines.
