THE SHORT ANSWER

Lithium disilicate is a glass-ceramic composed primarily of silicon dioxide (roughly 57-80%) and lithium oxide (roughly 15-21%), combined with smaller amounts of alumina, potassium oxide, phosphorus pentoxide, and nucleating agents. The controlled crystallization of these compounds produces interlocking lithium disilicate crystals that give the material its flexural strength of approximately 360-400 MPa.

THE CONTEXT

What sits behind it

The raw materials are melted together and then processed through a two-stage heat-press or CAD/CAM milling workflow. During the first stage, a lithium metasilicate intermediate is formed, which is machinable but weak. The second firing converts it to the final lithium disilicate phase, locking in the interlocking crystal microstructure that delivers both strength and translucency. That two-stage chemistry is what makes the material compatible with either pressed fabrication or milled-then-crystallized workflows.

For prosthodontists and restorative dentists, the composition matters clinically because the crystal density directly controls light transmission. Higher lithium disilicate crystal volume produces a more opaque result; lower density yields greater translucency. Selecting the right ingot or block shade and opacity at prescription time, before the case reaches the lab, avoids remakes driven by shade mismatch at seating.
