THE SHORT ANSWER

For most anterior cases, lithium disilicate (e.g., IPS e.max) is the leading choice: it transmits light similarly to natural enamel, achieves flexural strength around 400 MPa, and layers or presses to any shade target. High-translucency zirconia is the preferred alternative when parafunction or bruxism is a factor, trading marginal translucency for added fracture resistance above 700 MPa.

The right material depends on three clinical variables: esthetic demand, occlusal load, and margin position. Lithium disilicate handles the full anterior esthetic range from A1 to high-value bleach shades. It integrates well with digital workflows because it mills cleanly from CAD-generated blocks and lends itself to stain-and-glaze or full-contour polish. For most Segments 1 and 2 clinicians, it covers roughly 80 percent of anterior single-unit cases without compromise.

High-translucency multilayer zirconia has closed the esthetic gap substantially since 2019. Gradient-sintered blanks place higher-chroma dentin layers at the incisal base and higher-translucency enamel layers at the tip, producing optical depth that reads naturally at 1-meter viewing distance. Prosthodontists managing bruxers or patients with a history of porcelain fracture on PFM restorations will find multilayer zirconia the more defensible call: the remake risk drops, and chair time stays predictable.

Shade communication is where anterior crown cases succeed or fail regardless of material. A prescription that includes a stick-shade photo under natural light, a VITA Classical reference, and a note on value versus chroma gives the ceramist what they need to hit the target on the first pour.
