What is the most esthetic crown material?

For anterior cases, material choice directly determines whether a crown disappears into the smile or reads as artificial. Feldspathic porcelain built over a ceramic or zirconia coping gives the technician the most control over characterization, depth, and translucency. The tradeoff is brittleness: feldspathic layers are vulnerable to occlusal load without a supporting substructure, so case selection matters. A single upper central incisor in a light-contact bite is the textbook candidate.

Lithium disilicate sits one step below feldspathic in raw optical fidelity, but it closes the gap in nearly every clinical scenario because the material itself is translucent. At 400 MPa flexural strength versus 60-100 MPa for pressed feldspathic, e-max handles premolar loading that feldspathic cannot. Prosthodontists running full anterior rehabilitations frequently specify monolithic e-max with cutback and layering on the facial surface to capture the incisal halo effect.

High-translucency zirconia (HT-Zr, 5Y grade) has entered this conversation since 2019. It does not match feldspathic or e-max optically in anterior zone cases, but in the premolar and posterior esthetic zone it performs well, ships faster from a milling workflow, and survives parafunction.
